During my daily walk this afternoon I spent some time thinking about the buddy system that is so essential in many different settings of our life. When we were young and went swimming, one technique that was often used to help keep track of everyone was the buddy system. The idea was that when there are more kids than adults, it is important to have somebody watching out for you. They’ve got your back. Since the adult who was responsible for your safety couldn’t physically watch everyone everywhere, it was very important to have somebody sharing that responsibility. I watch out for you. You watch out for me. That way, if there is ever any trouble, somebody will notice the problem and alert others to avoid disaster. We don’t want anybody drowning in our pool. It was even more important when the pool was a larger area; maybe a lake, where more area was being covered.
Education
When we went to school, the buddy system wasn’t used quite so much. Instead of watching your back while you watched mine, we were for some reason told that we had to do our work in isolation. If I shared my results and insights with you, in many instances it was considered cheating. Of course I understand that each individual needs to develop basic skills and abilities. The problem is, this educational framework worked its way into our working life also. We developed individual skills and were discouraged from working with others in our field. They were viewed as our competitor, rather than our ally. Companies generally hire individuals, rather than teams. Individuals are rewarded in most cases based on the perception of their individual contribution to the corporation. The perception of value is often very skewed.
When it comes to life skills, the buddy system that was abandoned in our education and work life is not only important, it is essential.
- When we need to do important things in our life, we need the support to Take Big Steps.
- If we don’t have someone watching our back, who is like-minded, who understands our goals, our intentions and our Vission™, the chances of success are significantly reduced.
- We don’t Take Big Steps without proper support.
- If you don’t have a buddy watching your back, you’re in serious trouble.
Find a Like-Minded Friend
How do you find someone who is like-minded? How do you find someone who understands what you are trying to accomplish with your life? Most people are not surrounded with like-minded people because most people are so busy complaining about how bad their life is, they have no energy or intention of making anything better. They plod through life hoping to survive another mediocre day.
But you’re not like that. If you were, you would have stopped reading a long time ago. Congratulations! Improving yourself and making a difference in your life and with your life is something that interests you. At least a little.
